Lykos Winery "Assyrtiko" 2018
100% AssyrtikoEvolved & smokey. Brioche & rubber.
Tasting Notes
The Assyrtiko 2018 from Lykos winery has a lovely golden colour.
On the nose the bouquet is evolved and shows the time in oak. It opens with notes of brioche, rubber and wet stone. There is some smokeyness too. At a second sniff you get quince and candied grapefruit.
The mouthfeel is full and round, yet the freshness is very much there suggesting good potential for aging.
On the palate the bready, vanilla notes meet fresh almond and a bitter after taste.
The finish is medium long.
How it's made
The wine spends 4 months in new French oak barrels. It ferments sur lie and undergoes bâtonnage.
Note that the wines sampled here were provided to me for free, by the producer or a stockist of theirs.

Assyrtiko
Varietal
Assyrtiko is a Greek white wine grape, probably the best known variety indigenous to this country. This grape is native to the island of Santorini. Here the soil is arid and volcanic which contributes to Assyrtiko distinctive mineral character.
While Assyrtiko is originally from Santorini, it is now grown all over Greece, from the northern area of Macedonia (Makedonia) to the Attica (Attika) region. Cuttings of Assyrtiko have also made it to the New World and Assyrtiko wine is now produced in Australia and the United States too!
