Campania is an Italian administrative district. The small Phlegraean Islands and Capri are administered as part of the area, which is located on the south-western tip of the Italian Peninsula, with the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west. The region has a population of about 5,820,000 people, making it the country’s third-most populous region; its total area of 13,590 km2 (5,247 sq mi) makes it Italy’s most densely populated region. Campania is the most prosperous region in southern Italy in terms of GDP, with Naples’ metropolitan area ranked seventh in the European Union in terms of population. The area is home to ten of Italy’s 55 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Pompeii and Herculaneum, Caserta’s Royal Palace, the Amalfi Coast, and Naples’ Historic Center. Mount Vesuvius is also included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
